Exit Interview

In short

An exit interview is a conversation that aims to understand, from the departing employee’s point of view, their experience of the organisation and the factors behind their decision to leave.

In a handover, the focus is on who the work passes to and how. An exit interview, by contrast, makes room for what the employee has experienced. Alongside the reasons for leaving, they can share practices they would like the organisation to keep.

Deepen an open question such as “Which opportunity you were looking for in your new role influenced your decision?” with examples about workload, manager support or development opportunities. Before the interview, explain who will see the notes. Rather than drawing conclusions about a team from a single comment, review themes that recur across interviews together with the relevant data on the practice.
