Employee Turnover and Retention

In short

Turnover is the share of employees who leave in a period relative to average headcount; retention measures the opposite: those who stay.

[DRAFT] Prepared for team approval; this note will be removed once approved.

Voluntary (resignation) and involuntary (termination) exits are tracked separately; first-year exits signal onboarding, exits of high performers signal culture and leadership. Formula: (leavers in period ÷ average headcount) × 100.

Why it matters

Replacing an employee can cost a large share of annual salary depending on the role. Turnover is one of the most concrete return indicators of employer brand and internal communication investment.

Reducing it through communication

  • Systematic analysis of exit interview data
  • A first-90-days plan and manager communication
  • Visibility of career opportunities and recognition
  • Action communication based on engagement survey results
