Employee Engagement
Employee engagement is the emotional connection an employee feels to their work and organisation and their willingness to give discretionary effort; unlike satisfaction, it shows in behaviour.
[DRAFT] Prepared for team approval; this note will be removed once approved.
A satisfied employee does not complain; an engaged employee gives extra effort to do the job better. Drivers include the relationship with the manager, meaning and purpose, development opportunities, recognition, transparent communication and wellbeing. Engagement is measured regularly with surveys and indicators such as eNPS.
Why it matters
High engagement correlates with low attrition, high productivity and customer satisfaction. Global studies show most employees are not engaged, which makes it the biggest opportunity for internal communication and leadership.
The role of communication
- Connecting purpose and strategy to each person's work
- Leader visibility and two-way communication
- Recognition and success stories
- Sharing survey results and acting on them ("we heard you")
