Stay Interview

In short

A stay interview is a conversation held during employment to understand why an employee stays with the organisation and which conditions could affect their wish to stay.

It lets you hear, in the employee’s own words, which work they find meaningful, where they struggle and what they want to learn in the future. So that they can speak openly, the purpose of the conversation and how the information will be used are explained in advance.

You can open with the question “What moment in the last six months made you happiest to be working here?” If heavy workload or unclear career steps come up in the answer, ask for a recent example. Close the conversation with a step the manager can follow up on and a date for getting back to the employee.
