The First 90 Days

In short

The first 90 days is the critical period in which a new hire adapts and largely decides whether to stay: the main time frame of onboarding communication.

[DRAFT] Prepared for team approval; this note will be removed once approved.

Research shows that many new hires decide within the first three months whether they will stay. Expectations are set, relationships are built and culture is learned in this window. A good 30-60-90 plan sets learning goals for month one, contribution for month two and ownership for month three, with communication planned at each stage.

Why it matters

Early departures waste hiring cost and damage the employer brand. A planned first 90 days reinforces the "I am in the right place" feeling early.

Communication checkpoints

  • Day 1: welcome, team introductions, first-week plan
  • Day 30: expectations conversation, short survey
  • Day 60: feedback and development plan
  • Day 90: review, recognition, long-term goals
