Internal Communication Strategy

In short

An internal communication strategy is the annual plan that defines goals, employee segments, key messages, channels, frequency, ownership and measurement.

[DRAFT] Prepared for team approval; this note will be removed once approved.

Strategy moves internal communication beyond producing announcements on request. It starts from business goals (growth, transformation, culture), defines what employees must know, feel and do for each goal, and then builds messages, channels and calendar accordingly.

Why it matters

Internal communication without strategy creates "communication fatigue" through too many channels and messages at once. Strategy reduces to the essential: which message matters, from whom, on which channel, how often.

Steps

  • Situation analysis: channel audit, employee survey, manager interviews
  • Goals and indicators (knowledge, perception, behaviour)
  • Segment × message × channel matrix
  • Annual calendar, ownership, crisis protocol
  • Quarterly review
