Horizontal Communication

In short

Horizontal communication is direct communication between employees or teams at similar levels of responsibility, set up for coordination and information sharing.

Sales and operations teams may handle the same customer’s request at different stages. Regular information exchange between the two ensures that a promise made by one makes it into the other’s plan in time.

When a delivery date changes, for example, decide who will update the shared record and who will get back to the customer. Questions teams ask again and again help reveal where the flow of information breaks down. A shared record or a short coordination meeting often meets this need.
